Dianabol is the trade name for the orally-effective anabolic steroid Methandrostenolone. It’s also known as Danabol or D-Bol.

Facts about Dianabol (Methandrostenolone)

Dianabol is hands-down the most popular anabolic steroid among bodybuilders and athletes. It’s also one of the most important steroids in bodybuilding. Developed by Dr. John Ziegler and Ciba Pharmaceutical Company in the 1950s, Danabol enables bodybuilders to achieve a highly muscular body, well-defined muscles, and firmness that are beyond compare. But the steroid came about as a result of earlier testosterone research, which had begun in the beginning of 20th century.

More specifically, D-bol was developed in response to suspected use by the USSR’s Olympic athletes. The USSR athletes dominated the Olympic Games, bodybuilding and weightlifting competitions, starting from the 1940s through to the 1950s due to steroid use. As the U.S. Olympic team doctor, Dr. Ziegler had to take proactive steps to ensure his athletes would match up or even get an edge on their rivals. He joined hands with Ciba Pharmaceutical Co. to create Methandrostenolone hormone, which the company went on to manufacture and fully release into the U.S. market in 1958. It was marketed under the trade name Dianabol.

Dr. Ziegler administered Dianabol to U.S. Olympic Team athletes with the intent of giving them an edge. It proved to be a major success, with many Team USA athletes gaining an unquestionable advantage over their rivals. This saw it become an extremely popular anabolic steroid, marking its entry into virtually every competitive sport. Dianabol would also rapidly become the most commonly used steroid in bodybuilding, a fact that remains true up to the present day.

However, by 1968, the use of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances was banned from the Olympics; and by the late 1980s, steroid use was completely banned from nearly all competitive sports. Finally, in 1990, FDA’s strict regulations saw the manufacture and distribution of D-Bol become illegal in the U.S. This, in turn, forced Ciba to discontinue the Dianabol tab, but the steroid is still legally manufactured in many other countries across the globe.

Dianabol: Profile

Methandrostenolone is an anabolic androgenic steroid that is derived from testosterone, the primary male androgen. Or more specifically, it is a structurally altered form of testosterone whereby a double bond is added at the carbon one and two position. This modification reduces the steroid’s androgenic properties. It possesses a methyl group at the 17th position (17a-alkylation), which allows it to pass through the liver without being broken down by various enzymes and enter the blood stream. So Dianabol is a 17 alpha alkylated steroid.

D-Bol carries a moderate androgenic rating and an extremely potent anabolic rating (or an androgenic rating of 40-60). The drug binds tightly to the androgen receptor to exert its effects. However, it has a much lower androgen receptor binding affinity than testosterone; but shares a much weaker relationship for serum binding proteins. As a result, D-Bol exhibits very powerful anabolic properties which can be quite helpful in bodybuilding.

Dianabol Benefits For Bodybuilders

The steroid’s tremendously powerful anabolic nature delivers a number of beneficial effects for bodybuilders. It produces dramatic increases in protein biosynthesis, breakdown of glycogen (glycogenolysis), muscle mass and strength over a short period of time. To boost protein synthesis (which results in muscle growth), D-Bol promotes increased nitrogen retention within cells. Nitrogen is an important component of protein. Proteins are made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and form the raw material from which muscle and many other bodily tissues are built. Lack of nitrogen within cells triggers catabolic state (muscle wasting). By stimulating nitrogen retention, Dianabol causes increased protein synthesis and prevents muscles from catabolizing during and after hard training. Enhanced glycogenolysis by D-Bol allows the body to make better use of total carbohydrate consumption, which is essential for achieving a normal and efficient source of fuel and energy for the human body.

But, it’s worth noting that Danabol is best used as part of a well-planned anabolic steroid stack. A D-Bol only cycle is not usually recommended for bodybuilders. This is because while a D-Bol only cycle can help bodybuilders make great gains, especially when it comes to gaining strength and muscle mass, these gains will rapidly disappear once the cycle is stopped; and you cannot supplement with this steroid indefinitely due to the negative Dianabol side effects such as liver toxicity.

However, performance athletes may implement a D-Bol only cycle. With a Dianabol only cycle, athletes are able to gain a rapid and extensive buildup in strength – which translates to more speed and power, all of which are vital to achieving success in athletic pursuits. Athletes can also expect to benefit from enhanced recovery and endurance, which is associated with the use of a powerful anabolic steroid such as Methandrostenolone.

Because it is not possible to supplement with Dianabol indefinitely, this steroid is often used as an off-cycle bulking steroid. This is actually its most common purpose of use. When used in such a manner, the super-fast-acting Danabol produces dramatic increases in mass. Gains of even 20 pounds of mass are possible in only a few weeks of D-Bol supplementation, but this will largely depend on the individual’s total dosing, caloric consumption and their physiology.

Dianabol Side Effects For Bodybuilders

While Danabol is quick-acting and delivers faster results, it is associated with a number of undesirable side effects. Normally, if the steroid is used correctly, these side effects are less pronounced and sometimes not even seen at all depending on the individual user’s response to Methandrostenolone.

Dianabol produces a moderate level of aromatase activity, but it can still lead to relatively strong estrogenic effects. Estrogenic side effects of D-Bol include: gynecomastia, water retention, and high blood pressure. To combat these estrogenic side effects, it is recommended that bodybuilders use anti-estrogens when supplementing with this steroid.

Although D-Bol is not a very androgenic steroid, androgenic side effects are still possible. Such undesirable side effects of D-Bol use include: body hair growth, accelerated hair loss in individuals predisposed to male pattern baldness, and acne. Most male bodybuilders should not have a problem with such side effects, but this individual response to the drug may differ.

Despite its moderate level of androgenic activity, D-bol use may trigger virilization symptoms in women. Such virilization symptoms include: clitoral enlargement, deepening of the vocal chords, and body hair growth. Taking extremely low doses may help reduce these symptoms, but there’s still a risk.
As a C 17-alpha alkylated anabolic steroid, D-bol carries a hepatotoxic nature. But, when used responsibly, its total hepatotoxicity will not lead to liver damage.

Dianabol use has a negative effect on cholesterol. It increases LDL or bad cholesterol and suppresses HDL or good cholesterol. It is, therefore, important to manage cholesterol levels during Danabol use.
Dianabol use promotes water retention, which leads to high blood pressure. But the occurrence of blood pressure and cholesterol issues will largely depend on a person’s lifestyle. Eating a diet rich in omega fatty acids and indulging in cardiovascular activity can help manage these issues. Individuals with cholesterol and blood pressure problems should avoid supplementing with this drug.

Like other anabolic steroids, Dianabol causes suppression of natural testosterone production in the body. This problem can be very pronounced, and it is recommended that bodybuilders include some form of exogenous testosterone with their D-Bol use.

When taken in large dosages or for a prolonged period of time, these Dianabol side effects can be very pronounced, and may appear almost overnight. The good news is that they can be controlled, and you must take proactive steps to ensure they don’t become a problem. Generally, it is recommended by bodybuilding circles to restrict the use of the steroid to no more than a few weeks. The drug should be discontinued if any of the dangerous Dianabol side effects occur.
